George Wyse

Class of 1960

Dr. Wyse's early training in Pharmacy and Pharmacology was obtained at the Universities of British Columbia and Manitoba. He obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from McGill University in 1969 and did two years of postdoctoral research at the University of New Mexico before entering Medical School at the University of Calgary. After obtaining his MD in 1974, he did training in Internal Medicine at Foothills Hospital followed by Cardiology at Oregon Health Sciences University. He joined the Faculty of The University of Calgary in 1978, achieving the rank of Professor in 1985 and was the Chief of Cardiology from 1986 to 1993. He became Associate Dean (Clinical Affairs) in 1993. Dr. Wyse completed a sabbatical leave at the Clinical Trials Branch of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute in Bethesda in 1992-93. He was intimately involved in the planning and completion of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Suppression Trial (CAST) and the Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillators (AVID) trial and chaired the Planning and Steering Committees for the Atrial Fibrillation Follow-Up Investigation of Rhythm Management (AFFIRM) Trial.

Dr. Wyse has had several academic awards over the years. He was a Clinical Investigator of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta from 1978 to 1984 and a Scholar of the Alberta Heritage Fund for Medical Research from 1984 to 1993. He has held numerous research grants and contracts and was the founding Coordinator of the MRC Program Grant in cardiac electrophysiology at The University of Calgary. Dr. Wyse is an active member of several professional and academic societies and associations and has served on a large number of important local, provincial, national and international committees relating to the medical profession and medical research. In 1993, he was honoured publicly with a Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

Dr. Wyse has numerous publications in the areas of cardiac arrhythmias and vascular smooth muscle pharmacology. George and his wife Bonnie passed away on January 6, 2022.
