1950 - 1951
John Carmichael

John Roderich Carmichael, passed away on August 23, 2017, at the age of 84.

Loving husband to Winnie for 56 years, he was also the father of four boys and a wonderful grandfather to seven lucky grandchildren. Born in Kamloops in 1933, John was a BC boy to the core. From the sagebrush hills of his hometown to the coastal waters of Rivers Inlet to the alpine meadows of northern BC, he maintained a lifelong connection to the outdoors which he shared with his family through hiking, canoeing, fishing, hunting and camping.

John was a Professional Engineer, having earned a degree in electrical engineering from UBC in 1957 and later an MBA at Simon Fraser University. He enjoyed a successful career as an executive with BC Hydro and lived in many different parts of BC, finally moving to Victoria where he retired in 1992.

For the next 25 years, John and Winnie embraced retirement, wintering in the South with friends and travelling the world while always maintaining a warm and loving relationship with their rapidly expanding clan. The family home in Victoria became the scene of many boisterous and memorable get-togethers, requiring that the dining room table be extended to great lengths to accommodate everyone. Afterwards, he would often be found in the living room, surrounded by grandkids as he read to or played with them. John was a thoughtful, considerate and loving human being. He was a natural storyteller and an engaging conversationalist. Always attentive to others,

John was a true "people person", a fact made evident by the rich and lasting friendships he had, some going back to his childhood almost 80 years ago! His full and rewarding life touched many people, and he will be missed by those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of his Life is being planned by the family.
