Kamloops High School Legislative Minutes 1947-'50
by Gordon Lloyd
Minutes of the student Legislative Assembly are available. This assembly followed parliamentary procedures and functioned in a manner that was similar to the BC Legislature and the Canadian House of Commons. Student affairs were run for about $1,000 each year with one-half the revenue coming from student cards and the balance from fund raisers such as school dances. Funds were allocated to general student activities: such as dances as well as to specific athletic teams, awards, and fine arts presentations.
One of the decisions made by the Assembly, in 1950, with Miss Foord representing the staff, was to implement a block system of big and small blocks to recognize student achievement. Blocks were to be red K with black background. This lead to the idea of having a special block, a gold K for students who demonstrated outstanding achievement in two of academics, athletics or fine arts. Student representatives on the committee which determined the criteria were John Willoughby, Bonnie Boyd and Bob Saklofsky.
